DONALD SINTA QUARTET
Artist's BiographySince forming in November of 2010, The Donald Sinta Quartet (DSQ) has achieved great renown internationally for their recitals, concerto performances, and championing of cutting edge new repertoire. Named for legendary University of Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta, all members of the group studied with Sinta during various degree programs and their name is recognition of their admiration and appreciation for their great mentor.
DSQ were the featured student soloists with the University of Michigan Symphony Band during the historic 2011 tour through China and Los Angeles. The group performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world including the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Tour performances also featured DSQ at the Shanghai Conservatory, Hanban Headquarters, as well as a performance for the students of the Youth Orchestras of Los Angeles. Their concerto performances featured the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winning composer William Bolcoms Concerto Grosso for Saxophone Quartet and Band. They can be heard performing this work on the Michigan Symphony Bands latest recording Artifacts. Recent reviews of the recording praised the quartet as, Really superb musicians! (Audiophile Audition), and, The highlight of the album(American Record Guide). DSQ will be returning to this great work in March of 2014 as soloists with the Dallas Wind Symphony
Following their performances in China, DSQ remained together and were featured in recital at the 35th International Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Virginia in January of 2012. During March of 2012 DSQ entered the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition and won 1st Place from a pool of over 50 saxophone quartets. After winning this prestigious award, DSQ was featured in recital this past summer at the 16th World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland premiering and performing works by UM student composers Ron Amchin, Roger Zare, and David Biedenbender. The group also performed this repertoire the following week in Thessaloniki, Greece for the 2012 International Society for Music Education Conference. Adding to their list of international performances, DSQ will be featured in recital in April 2013 at the Paris Conservatory and Selmer Paris showroom by invitation of Professor and international soloist Claude Delangle.
DSQs repertoire spans centuries and encompasses the great string quartet repertoire of Dvorak, Schubert, and Shostakovich as well as numerous saxophone standards and several new commissions and premieres by todays emerging young composers. To this end, DSQ has initiated a National Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition for two new works to be premiered in Paris next year.
